About the Lantern Festival

Incorporating Kaohsiung’s unique and rich characteristics, e.g. mountains, sea, river, harbor, into the concept of love and happiness, “2020 Kaohsiung Lantern Festival” intends to convey a unique festival atmosphere that is subtly feelings, warm, enthusiastic, and fun – with multiple cultural backgrounds, under the look of an industrialized Kaohsiung, through thematic festive lantern exhibits, large-scale programs performed by artists home and abroad, and featured endemic stalls.

Yearly, the 15th of the first lunar month marks the Lantern Festival, a signification of the end of the Lunar New Year, also the first full moon of the year. On Lantern Festival, families celebrate the lively and joyful time by lighting up lanterns, setting off fireworks, guessing lantern riddles, and eating sweet dumplings under the full moon. It is the wish that the joy in the spring festival would kick off a prosperous year, and that things would go well and families blessed throughout the year.

"2020 Kaohsiung Lantern Festival"

Themed on “Spring Leap Month, Prosperity and Progress, Embrace the World, Love and Happiness”, “2020 Kaohsiung Lantern Festival” will be held around the banks of Love River between Kaohsiung Bridge and Qixian Bridge from January 29 to February 9, 2020 (i.e. the 5th to 16th of the first lunar month). A variety of lantern exhibits are designed to display the urban feature exclusive to this city, including the harbor flavor of west Kaohsiung’s coast as well as the serenity and elegance of east Kaohsiung’s mountain. In addition, “2020 Kaohsiung Lantern Festival” is featured by various wonderful themes, such as “Opening Show”, “High-altitude Acrobatics Show”, “Hip-Hop Dance Show”, “Circus Show”, “Percussion Show”, “Taiwan Opera Show”, “International Show”, and “Moon Light Show”. Selectively chosen to perform during the festival, an array of domestic and foreign popular artists will be entertaining the viewers with programs and shows suitable for friends and families. People near and far are welcome to spend the Chinese New Year in Kaohsiung and make the trip memorable for 2020.
